Fernando Fernandez Biography Fernando Fernandez was born in Barcelona in 1940, where he still lives and works. Today he is one of the most prestigious portrait painters in Spain, with a long list of museums and luminaries as collectors. His figurative work has evolved into a contemporary realism with the elegance of Sargent, and the luminous compositions of Sorolla. Painted in his studio facing the Mediterranean, his works glow with the sea’s unique light. Fernandez began his professional career as a cartoonist near the end of the 1950s. Over the next two decades, he illustrated his own works, published by major publishing houses in Europe (Hachette, Rizzoli) and in the U.S. (Random House, Bantam, Macmillan and others). Since the early 1980s he has dedicated himself full-time to figurative oil painting. Fernandez received formal training at the prestigious Art School of La Llotja in Barcelona, and also took private classes with the master painter José Valls Nolasco. He also has a long and distinguished career as a master painter and educator himself: 1975-77 Professor of Drawing, Escuela Hermanos Maristas; 1981-82 Founder/Professor Teacher, T.C.I School of Drawing; 1990-92 Professor, Createcnia ( Academy of Visual Arts ); and 1980-84 Founder/Member of the Executive Committee, Barcelona International Illustration Fair. Fernandez has been hailed as one of the great masters of the Barcelona School of figurative painting. His work is highly realistic yet profoundly romantic. He has been exhibited throughout Europe, with more than 100 individual and collective shows. Fernandez’ work is held in private collections throughout the Americas and Europe, as well as diverse locations from Saudi Arabia to Japan. His work is even held in the personal collection of the King of Spain.
