The Print Process
The Hulton-Getty Collection of
Giclee prints are created by an amazing process. The printer sprays
four million droplets of ink per second toward the paper mounted on a
revolving drum. To precisely control where the ink is to be placed, the
printer selects or rejects each microscopic ink droplet, while the drum spins
past the print nozzles at speeds of 100-250 ips(inces per second). Ink
droplets measure 15 microns in size, approximately the size of a red blood
cell. This gives the giclee the appearance of continuous even tones even
under the most detailed magnification.
